There is much organisation amongst the working classes and especially 
amongst workmen belonging to the more skilled trades and industries. It was 
estimated at the close of 1904 that of the brewers 85'5 per cent, belonged to trade 
unions of some kind, of the stonemasons 76 - 2 per cent., of the woodworkers .58*8 
per cent., of the carpenters 56‘6 per cent., of the metal workers 37*7 per cent., of 
the painters and plasterers 32 per cent., of the textile workers 26'8 per cent., 
of labourers engaged in transport 22 per cent., and of masons’ labourers 
10 per cent. 
The following table summarises the predominant wages and hours of 
labour in the more important occupations : —

* The wages and hours of labour stated for the building trades are fora full week in summer. 
On the basis of the rates given in the above Table, the level of wages of 
skilled men in the building trades is represented by 89 as compared with 100 in 
Berlin, while for labourers in the building trades the percentage is 94. The 
rates for printers are 88 per cent, of those in Berlin.
