to turn yellow and to fall. The crops are harvested from
the middle of September to early inn October. When the
peculiar colour indicative of the ripening appears on the
pods, the Bean stalks are cut off at about 1 in. from the
ground to be left drying for 4 or 5 days. Then, they are
to be carted to the place for purification specially prepared
for the purpose, where they are spread on the ground evenly
to be shelled out by means of a stone-roller. Then, the
grains are to be separated from the pods, ete., by the force
of the wind, as they are thrown up info the air By means
of a wooden shovel. Next, what dirt and other foreign
matters there are found will be removed, and then the
Beans are to be stored away to be sent to the market
according to the price and other inducements.
4) IMPROVEMENT oF MANCHURIAN BEAN BREED
That Manchurian Beans have earned the present high
reputation as a world-wide commodity is not because of
their superior quality, bul because of their production in
immense quantities and cheap prices. Speaking of quality,
by reason of the slipshod style of cultivation and purifica-
tion methods, much impurity is found, not to mention the
mixture of different kinds of Beans, lowering the reputa-
tion as a merchandise far below Beans put out in Chosen,
