immediate settlement of the Irish question,
The response to the appeal of the Irish Party was
overwhelming in its unanimity and enthusiasm: of
the strenuous support of the over seas dominions
there had been already abundant proof. Every self-
governing Colony in the Empire had proclaimed
itself in favour of Irish Home Rule. South Africa,
the latest addition to the Empire family of free
nations, has been amongst the most enthusiastic in
its support,
By the Australian Senate the demand for Home
Rule was reiterated in a resolution of unanswerable
force, carried by a majority of 20 to 2 +
“ Enjoying and appreciating, as we do, the blessings of
Home Rule here, we would humbly express the hope that
a just measure of Home Rule may be granted immediately
to the people of Ireland. In this crucial hour, when the
might of your Empire is being wielded to maintain the
right of self-government for small nations, we feel con-
fident that the whole people of Ireland would be grateful,
loyal, and enthusiastic supporters of that high policy.
“They ask for it through their representatives-—never
has request more clear, consistent and continuous been
made by any nation. As subjects of your Majesty, we are
interested in the peace and contentment of al] parts of the
Empire, and we desire to see this long-standing grievance
at the very heart of the Empire removed.”
It is interesting to observe what is thought in the
Dominions beyond the seas of the armed resistance
of the Ulster minority to Home Rule :—
“ Honourable Members will recollect,” said Senator
Stewart, “that just prior to the outbreak of the war there
was some hope that Ireland would be granted a measure of
Home Rule. At that particular time, we found one very
prominent member of the British Parliament in open re-
bellion against the Government. I refer to Sir Edward
