PARTS,
CHAPTER II.
ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONDUCT OF CONFERENCE.
HIS EXCELLENCY, on the re-assembly of the Conference, said
that he thought the first task of the Conference should be to send a
telegram of greeting to His Majesty the King and to the rulers of the
other territories represented at the Conference: he then read to the
Conference a draft telgram to Their Majesties the King and Queen.
The Conference unanimously approved the terms of this telegram
which were as follows : —
*“ Delegates of the Union of South Africa, Southern Rhodesia,
British East African Dependencies, and Empire Cotton Growing
Corporation now assembled for a Combined Agricultural, Cotton,
Entomological, and Mycological Conference in Nairobi, submit
their humble duty to H.M. the King and H.M. the Queen, and,
together with the representatives of the Belgian Congo, Italian
Somaliland, Mozambique, and Portuguese East Africa, desire to
tender respectful greetings to Their Majesties. They trust that
this Combined Conference may be of value to the people of the
various territories in Africa represented.’’
His Excellency then suggested that instead of sending individual
telegrams to the rulers of the other territories represented, it would
be better, in accordance with the customary procedure, to ask the
Secretary of State to forward telegrams of greeting to H.M. the King
of Italy, H.M. the King of the Belgians, and the President of the
Portuguese Republic.
The Conference unanimously adopted this proposal.
His Excellency made reference to the telegram from the Secretary
of State to which he had referred in his Opening Speech, which was
to the following effect : —
“ 10th August. Request you will convey to delegates of
Agricultural Conference expression of my satisfaction that so
representative an assembly has been possible and my conviction
that their meeting will be of the greatest value in dealing with
problems on which prosperity of so many countries depends.
SECRETARY OF STATE.’
Proceeding, he read to the Conference a suggested draft reply, as
follows : —
“ The delegates of the Agricultural Conference now
assembled in Nairobi tender their thanks for your telegram of
good wishes and unanimously desire to express their appreciation
of your assistance in bringing together so representative a
gathering. They hope that their labours may benefit the peoples
and enlarge the agricultural production of all the countries from
which they come.”
The Conference unanimously agreed on the terms of this reply.
His Excellency, continuing, said that he had a few suggestions to
put forward as regards the arrangements to be made for the
conduct of the Conference.
