THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK
should be tied only with ‘‘ weaver’s knots,”
made neatly and with the ends cut as short
as possible,
All Artificial Silk garments should be kept
dry, as far as possible. Otherwise, they are
in danger of mould or mildew. They are
made of rich organic material and will pro-
vide sustenance for bacterial moulds. This
has been proved by recent tests.
The only serious drawback to Artificial Silk
is that it has no name of its own. Itis notin
any sense ‘‘ artificial.” No one thinks of
calling brick by the name of * artificial
stone,” nor steel by the name of “ artificial
wood.” It is a new and independent creation
of the brain of man—something cleverer than
Nature has given us.
Several names have been suggested—
““ Glos,” “ Rayon,” “ Glossamer "’ and others.
The “ DRAPER’S ORGANISER ’ offered a prize
for the best name. The winning word was
““ CELLINE,” but it was found that this is a
registered trade name and cannot be used.
The word ““ Rayon ” is not suitable, as it has
so many other meanings in the French
language.
