CITY OF TACOMA LIGHT & POWER DIVISION
HISTORY: Tacoma, Wash, is a city of 106,000 population, located on Puget
Sound, and is a deepsea port, noted for its lumber industry. Its original light
and water system was purchased from its private owners in 1893. Electricity
was generated by steam until 1897. Power was purchased from private companies
from 1897 until 1912 when a waterpower plant was built on the Nisqually River,
30 miles south of the city. This plant was adequate until 1918 when it was
again necessary to purchase power to meet the needs of the city. This continued
until 1922 when a 12,000 h.p. steam plant was built.
In 1926 the first 50,000 h.p. unit of an extensive development at Lake Cush-
pian Jag completed. calculated to serve until a second Cushman unit is finished
