(4) DEMAND FOR MANCHURIAN BEANS IN EUROPE
Bean cultivation in European countries has yet not
got out of the experimental stage. Therefore what is for
domestic consumption is to be imported entirely from Man-
churia.
The chief uses to which Beans are put are as oil-
yielding material. Lately the amount for food purposes
is on the increase. Still, in point of quantity, there is
no comparison with the former.
The heaviest consumers are England, Holland, and
Denmark. At Hull and Liverpool (England), Copenhagen
(Denmark) and Rotterdam and Amsterdam (Holland) and
elsewhere, the bulk of Beans is used at the oil mills.
The consumption in Germany used to beat the other
countries before the War, but their supply was out short
on the outbreak of the War. However, with the reconst-
ruction of industry in Germany, time is bound to come
when she will rise again to be the heaviest consumer of
Manchurian Beans on the Continent Actually, already
with the revival of the domestic oil industry, Manchurian
Beans are being imported into Germany in an increasing
quantity.
Next come Italy and Sweden. Especially in Italy,
the demand has been showing an inclination of remarkable
