Chapter V. Uses of Bean Cake
SECTION I.—CHARACTERISTICS OF BEAN CAKE &
TI'S ENLARGED USES
Bean residue left after the oil has been expressed or
extracted from Beans assumes three forms, viz, Bean Cake,
Bean Plate, and Bean Meal. In respect of general ingredi-
ents, their contents vary in amount, according to the kinds
of residue. (vide Chapter 6).
Hach contains a good amount of protein, and, being
turned out from Beans, an ideal article of food, the scope
of utility of the Bean residue is very extensive. . Then, seen
from the standpoint of price, the Bean residue is the lowest,
making in itself a reassuring feature for its future.
Heretofore the major portion of Manchurian Bean Cake
was exported to Japan, and it practically dominated the
fertilizer market as a cheap, excellent manure. In Europe
and America, the residue left of Manchurian Beans after
the oil has been extracted is used for cattlefeed. Consider-
ing the ingredients of Bean Cake, to consign the Cake for
fertilizing purposes as the case in Japan was, would be 8
culpable extravagance. It should first have been used as
cattle feed, and then the droppings will do excellently for
manure.
