of not less than one year, provided no other investigation is 
in progress in the Institute on the research topic that is of 
interest to the prospective donor, and also provided the 
Institute can give accommodation to the work that is neces- 
sary to solve the problems. Each industrial fellowship that 
is accepted by the Institute is the subject of a definite agree- 
ment between the industrialist, company, or association of 
manufacturers concerned and the Institute. 
The industrial fellowships of the Institute are of two 
general types, namely, individual and multiple. An in-

dividual industrial fellowship utilizes the services of one 
research chemist or engineer (with assistants when necessary), 
who is responsible directly to the executive staff of the 
[nstitute. A multiple industrial fellowship has the services 
»f one or more research men (junior fellows) under the di- 
rection of a senior fellow, who. in turn. is responsible to the 
axecutive staff. 
The Institute is not of a commercial nature, being en- 
tirely independent and deriving no financial profit from the 
‘nvestigations conducted under its auspices. = Moreover, 
members of the executive staff devote their time and ability 
to the interests of the Institute and of the University of 
Pittsburgh without outside remuneration.
