If you are studying civilization, begin with
your own home. Of what use is it that you
should read Lecky and Buckle, when your own
home is in a state of barbaric disorder. Charity
begins at home. So does Efficiency. So does
Education. So does Morality. So do Ambition
and Will-Power.
Once that a true Ambition springs up in a
man’s mind, he knows that the doing of his
present job will prepare him to do a harder
one. One success leads on to another. Before
Lindbergh made his famous flight by aeroplane
from New York to Paris, he had made
hundreds of smaller flights.
In order to shape an ambition that will suit
his abilities and his temperament, a young man
must study himself. He must ask himself—
‘¢ What is my strong point ? ”’
To begin with, his record at school will tell
him much. A boy who is good at mathematics
and bad at literature should not try to become
a writer. A boy who was not a leader in the
school playground is not likely to become a
good executive. He will not be good at handling
men.
A boy who was expelled from school is likely
to have an adventurous career. He was not
meant for an office or a shop. The boy who
