with the experimental methods of the natural
sciences that he can assure himself both that
there is Truth to be discovered and how to discover
 it.

The modern movement in the direction of allotting
 to Science its rightful position in the educational
 scheme is in large measure an attempt to
realize the ideals of Huxley. We are under such
a debt of gratitude to him for his clear vision in
educational affairs and many of us have been so
influenced by his life and works that no excuse is
needed for reprinting here (with the permission of
Messrs. Macmillan & Co. Ltd.) his general outline
of a boy's education, as- preserved for us in his
Essays.
The author desires gratefully to acknowledge
the assistance of Sir E. Ray Lankester and Professor
 R. A. Gregory, both of whom have read the
proofs and have made many valuable suggestions.
The quotations preceding each chapter have been
taken from Professor Gregory's most inspiring book,
