PREFACE

THE RIGHT HON. LORD RAYLEIGH, O.M.

As having been in the Chair at the meeting called
last year to discuss the “ Neglect of Science,” 1
am asked to write a few prefatory words to Mr.
Bryant's book. I feel some hesitation in complying,
as my educational experience is limited and
bears no comparison with that of the Author. But
I happen to remember pretty well my own school
days, and that I spent a great deal of time over
Latin and Greek with quite an average aptitude
and application, but with very little result. And I
feel sure that most of my contemporaries were in
like case.
On the general question I had occasion to express
my views some thirty-three years ago. In an
address to the British Association I remarked —
“ From the general spread of a more scientific
education, we are warranted in expecting important
results. Just as there are some brilliant literary
men with an inability, or at least a distaste practically
amounting to inability, for scientific ideas, so
there are a few with scientific tastes whose imaginations
are never touched by merely literary studies,
