The owner of the cattle arrived soon afterwards, to make #
bargain of a dollar each horse for Vostizza. He had left hif
animals concealed behind a bridge, and, as soon as we had
agreed to his terms, éhey were produced. This cunning ¥
the result of a long experience of Turkish violence. We sé!
off with some companions for Vostizza, along a road border
ing close upon the gulf, at the foot of lofty banks or hillf
that bound either side of the water. We passed some ric
little valleys, finely cultivated and all planted with the little
carraut-trees. Stopped at a hut in the middle of the day:
and ate some black bread and olives, and drank some wine
and water. Again set forward and reached Vostizza, a little
sea-port situated in a rich and well-cultivated valley, all
planted with currants. The people appeared industriousf
at work. On walking out into the town of Vostizza, I found
a few stone houses, apparently lately erected, and of publi
