“I shall be with you at the end of the week. The work
has been too heavy for me, and I have keen obliged to
throw an extrs share upon Bright and the old veteran
Colonel, 1 caught cold in coming {rom Carlisle to Glasgow
by night, and have not got rid of it. To-day has, however,
been very fine, and I have enjoyed a long walk with George
Combe into the country, looking at the farm-houses, each
of which has a tall chimney attached belonging to the engine
Bouse, 1 am obliged to come from Glasgow here on Thursday
 to go through the ceremony of receiving the freedom
of this city. Upon the whole, I am satisfied with the aspect
ot things in Scotland. I am nob afraid of their going back
froma their convictions, and there is scarcely a man Who is
Rot against the present law, and nearly all are going on to
botal repeal. Fox Maule’s conversion is important. He is
heir to 80,0000. a year in land, 40,000 acres under the
