fullscreen: Manchurian beans

At Dairen, in which extensive production is carried on
upon an intensive system, the hydraulic presses are
predominant.
However, in the remote part of Manchuria, small mills
will quite do, the products being only for local consumption,
besides owing to the low degree of civilization, the installa
ion of a modern equipment is sometimes rendered difficult,
and since the obsolete wedge system entails but a light
outlay, operated chiefly by manual labour on cheap-priced
and, it will make the enterprise pay. This accounts for
the retention of wedge-system mills in the outlandish
diatriets.
The mills of the screw system served for the transitory
period from the native wedge system to the new hydraulic
aystem.
