332 Siebter Abschnitt. f) Irland. Zum Schluß dieses Abschnitts müssen wir noch einen Augen- blick nach Irland wandern. Zunächst die Tatsachen, worauf es hier ankommt. Irlands Bevölkerung war 1841 auf 8222 664 Personen ange- wachsen, 1851 auf 6623985 zusammengeschmolzen, 1861 auf 5 850 309, 1866 auf 5*/, Millionen, ungefähr auf ihr Niveau von 1801. Die Abnahme begann mit dem Hungerjahr 1846, so daß Irland in weniger als 20 Jahren mehr als °/,, seiner Volksmenge verlor.1% Seine Gesamtauswanderung von Mai 1851 bis Juli 1865 zählte 1591487 Personen, die Auswanderung während der letzten 5 Jahre, 1861 bis 1865, mehr als */, Million. Die Zahl der bewohnten Häuser ver- minderte sich von 1851 bis 1861 um 52 990. Von 1851 bis 1861 wuchs die Zahl der Pachthöfe von 15 bis 30 Aecres um 61 000, die der Pacht- höfe über 80 Acres um 109000, während die Gesamtzahl aller Pachten um 120 000 abnahm, eine Abnahme, die also ausschließlich der Vernichtung von Pachten unter 15 Acres, mit andern Worten ihrer Zentralisation geschuldet ist. Die Abnahme der Volksmenge war natürlich im großen und ganzen von einer Abnahme der Produktenmasse begleitet. Für unsern Zweck genügt es, die 5 Jahre 1861 bis 1865 zu betrachten, während deren über ?/, Million auswanderte und die absolute Volks- zahl um mehr als */, Million sank. (Siehe Tabelle A.)
