. EVE)
Shipments of sweet potatoes originate for the most part in
:he Southeastern states and in four of the Middle Atlantic
states, the only other state shipping in quantity being Ten-
nessee. :
Virginia is the leading sweet potato state, originating 5,466
cars, or more than 29 per cent of the average annual ship-
ments of 18,591 cars during the three years. Of the other
states, the principal ones in order of importance are Tennes-
see, 1,798 cars; Delaware, 1,669 cars; New J ersey, 1,586 cars;
Maryland, 1,519 cars; Louisiana, 1,272 cars, and North Caro-
lina, 1,091 cars. The seven states named originated about 77
per cent of the total movement in the United States. More
than half of the total originated in the four Atlantic Seaboard
states of Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland.
Shipments of sweet potatoes are made in every month of
the year. In June, they are very light, and in May and July
comparatively so. September and October are the months of
heaviest movement, those for October slightly exceeding those
for September. From November to March, shipments drop
gradually and then with increasing rapidity to June. The
movement in June is almost entirely from Tennessee. The
heavy movement in September and October is due in large
part to shipments from Virginia.

Spinach
Texas and Virginia together furnish the bulk of the ship-
ments of spinach. Virginia has a slightly longer season than
Texas, beginning in October, one month earlier than Texas,
and closing in May, one month later than Texas. But Texas
makes the larger shipments,
Average annual shipments of spinach from Texas during
the three years amounted to 8,830 cars, while those from Vir-
ginia amounted to 3,029 cars. The combined shipments from
these two states were nearly 80 per cent of the average annual
shipments of spinach in the entire United States during the
period. Only one other state—Maryland—originates spinach
fo any appreciable extent in carload lots.

The shipping season for the United States as a whole is
practically eight months in length, few cars being shipped dur-
ing June, July, August or September. From October to De-
cember, shipments increase rapidly, exceeding 1,000 cars in
the latter month. From December to April, the increase in
shipments continues irregularly. The peak movement occurs
in April, after which shipments decline rapidly and almost
cease during the summer months.
