instruction for themselves and their clerks. He thereupon
abandoned his plans to proceed to New Orleans, and in
1839 the first business training school of America had its
inception in Pittsburgh at the corner of what is now First
avenue and Market street.
His efforts were highly repaid by the interest and cooparation
 of enterprising merchants. and in the following vear.

1840, the school was incorporated by the Legislature of the
State as “Duff’s Mercantile College of Pennsylvania”. The
school grew in popularity and size, and after nearly twenty
years, it was removed to Fifth avenue, where it located in
the Hussey building. In 1858, William H. Duff succeeded
his father and became principal of the college. Under his
direction, the institution attained the leading rank among
