WILL-POWER IN BUSINESS 
born timid. He acquired his courage by 
forcing himself to face dangers that frightened 
him. 
Courage can be created by will-power ; 
and will-power, as we have seen in the previous 
chapter, can be strengthened and moulded by 
the development of a Purpose. 
In practical business life, courage can be 
developed by preferring the hard jobs. Any 
young man who asks for a harder job instead 
of an easy one, will soon step ahead of the 
crowd. 
A certain Londoner, who is now high up 
among financiers, once accepted a very difficult 
job in place of a fairly easy one. He was asked 
why he had made the change, and he gave a 
good answer. He replied : ‘‘ It is a man’s job, 
and I am keen to have a shot at it.” 
The vast mass of people prefer the easy 
jobs. They shrink back from risk and responsi- 
bility. Either they play or they do as they are 
told, and that is their whole life—playing and 
obeying. 
Inevitably, they remain as much alike as 
peas in a pod or blades of grass in a field. 
They do not develop either will-power or 
courage. Their slogan is—the most money
