Die gewerblichen Zustände im i8. Jahrhundert.

Unterrichtet. Dorpat macht im Ganzen während des vorigen Jahr 
hunderts den Eindruck einer zurückbleibenden Stadt. Gegen den 
"Ausgang der zwanziger Jahre starb das Geschlecht der Männer 
die den Wiederaufbau der Stadt in’s Werk gesetzt hatten, 
l^nd in den nun folgenden Jahrzehnten herrschte bei bitterer Armuth 
(^ler Bevölkerung nur der eine egoistische Gedanke vor, wie 
sich der Konkurrenz erwehrend, sich die „bürgerliche Nahrung“ 
^"geschmälert erhalten könne. Kleinliche Händel und Eifersüchte 
leien machen sich in allen Kreisen der Gesellschaft geltend, 
^•"gends findet sich auch nur bei den leitenden Personen im Stadt- 
^egimente eine Spur von Verständniss für die wahre Lage und die 
Wirklichen Bedürfnisse des Landes. Wenn sich noch Geld in der 
^Wtkasse befindet, so wird es für Bestätigung von Privilegien 
Processe verausgabt*. Eine Feuersbrunst, die 1763 über die 
^^dt hereinbrach, vernichtete die Keime eines eben sich regenden 
^hlstandes, und so weist die Stadt 1765 nur 400, 1769 nicht mehr 
570 Häuser auf, unter welchen 152 am nördlichen Embachufer, 
^40 Hütten der Vorstädte waren. Die in diesen lebende Bevöl- 
^ ^rung belief sich auf 3cxxj, 1774 angeblich 3300 Einwohner. So 
^"gsam wuchs die Stadt, dass zwischen 1719 und 1782 in der 
grossen Gilde nur 2^8, in der kleinen Gilde 415 Bürger Aufnahme 
fanden 2. 
. dieser Sachlage ist es bemerkenswerth, dass das gewerb- 
Leben nicht völlig rostete, sondern neue Ämter entstanden 
die vorhandenen sich ihre Privilegien bestätigen Hessen. Ohne 
i^de Gewähr, dass das nachstehende Verzeichniss ein vollständiges 
da eine die Schölersche Sammlung ergänzende Quelle uns nicht 
^kannt ist, sei hier mitgetheilt, von welchen im Laufe des vorigen 
^^"hunderts, wie es scheint, neu errichteten Ämtern sich die 
^^"ägen erhalten haben. Es sind:
