— II — St. Louis gehaltenen Vortrag Apponyis «The juridical nature of the relations between Austria and Hungary » 1 hat sich bereits Harold Steinacker hinlänglich geäußert. 2 Beachtenswerterweise ruft Apponyi ausdrücklich und be sonders auch die öffentliche Meinung Italiens als Bundes genossen gegen die von ihm gefürchtete Idee eines großen Österreichs oder Großösterreichs an. Präzis behauptet er in seinem Aufsatz « Delle relazioni costituzionali fra 1’ Unghe- ria e 1’ Austria» 3 : Tali errori sono poi propagati da certe correnti della letteratura politica austriaca ed anche ger manica, giacche varii pubblicisti di quei paesi persistono nel voler dare una base scientifica alla chimera, oggi abbando- nata, di una grande Austria unificata, di cui l’Ungheria non sarebbe che una provincia piü o meno autonoma. Tale con- cetto, chimerico nella scienza non meno che nella politica, e difatti il irpokov 'teO'oo?, l’errore fondamentale, da cui derivano tutti gli altri. Aber : La veritä storica e giuridica contrad- dice assolutamente a tale arbitrario concetto. Man müsse vielmehr zu dem Schlüsse kommen 4 : L’ idea di confis- care una storia [sic !] e di mediatizzare una individualitä nazionale come la nostra, di fondere in un unico Stato, di sottomettere alla medesima legislazione, di costituire in unitä morale e giuridica due [sic !] paesi e due [sic !] popoli di natura cosi opposta, e altrettanto priva di senso in politica che contraria a diritti imprescrittibili. Nicht nur Tezner, Turba und Steinacker sind dem vernichtenden Urteil unterworfen.
