He convinced the Board of Directors. They gave him the few thousands of pounds that he needed. He was enabled to perfect the process. From that time Courtaulds never looked back. They pushed on until in a year or two success came like a flood and almost swept them off their feet. It is a curious fact that most business men are apt to undervalue the power of an effective speech. But many a large business enterprise has been started on its way by an earnest speech, packed with facts, delivered to the right audience. The great Steel Combine of America was started by a speech by Charles M. Schwab. It convinced J. P. Morgan, and the largest company in the world was the result. And in the creation of the vast business of Courtaulds, it was a speech by Henry Greenwood Tetley that overcame the last obstacle.
