Louisiana. Wurden mehr Unionvotes als Secessionsvotes 
bei der Wahl für die Delegaten zur Konvention gegeben. Aber die 
Delegates liefen über. 
Der Westen von Carolina, Osten von Tennessee, Norden von 
5 Alabama und Georgia, Bergdistrikte sehr verschiedner Interessen 
von denen der südlichen swamps. 
Der 2te Dezembercharakter des ganzen Sezessionsmanövers 
(die Kerls daher auch gezwungen, den Krieg zu provozieren, um 
unter dem Schrei „The North against the South‘ die Bewegung in 
vo Gang zu halten), den Du aus den nachfolgenden Exzerpten siehst, 
noch dadurch offenbar, daß die Verräter in Buchanans Admini- 
stration, die an der Spitze der Bewegung standen —- Kriegsmini- 
ster Floyd, Marineminister Toucey, Finanzminister Cobb, Mini- 
ster des Innern Thompson —, zusammen mit den Hauptsenatoren 
ıs des Südens, auf das Tiefste involviert waren in den auf viele Mil- 
lionen sich belaufenden dilapidations, die im Laufe des 
Dezember 1860 der Kongreß (Repräsentantenhaus) einem Com- 
mittee zur Inquiry übergeben hatte. Für Teil dieser Kerls wenig- 
stens galt es, sich vom Zuchthaus zu retten. Daher sie die willig- 
z sten Werkzeuge der 300 000 slave holder Oligarchie. Daß letztre 
durch ihre Konzentration, Stellung und Mittel fähig, für den 
Augenblick jede Opposition to put down, selbstverständlich. In 
einem Teil der „poor whites‘“ fanden sie den mob, der ihnen die 
Zuaven ersetzte. 
# Georgia „The Griffin Union“: „It is mere mockery 
for the same men who made the Constitution in Montgomery to 
come back to Georgia und ratify it under the name of a state con- 
vention.“ „The Macon Journal“: „The State Conventions 
‚+. called for another purpose .. . assume that they are the people, 
zo and under such an assumption of power can appoint delegates to 
a General Convention without consulting the people. All the 
acts of the Congress of their Confederacy are 
passed in secret session with closed doors, and 
what is done is kept from the people.“ „The Augusta Chro- 
snicle and Sentinel“ (größtes Georgia-paper): „The 
whole movement for secession, and the formation of 
a new Government, so far at least as Georgia is concerned (und 
Georgia der volksreichste der Sklavenstaaten), proceed on only 
a quasi consent of the people, and was pushed through, 
wo under circumstances of great excitement and frenzy — by a 
fictitious majority. With all the appliances brought to bear 
etc., the election of the 4th of January showed a falling off of nearly 
3000, and an absolute majority of elected deputies of 79. But, 
upon assembling, by wheedling, coaxing, buying, and all the 
« arts of deception, the convention showed a majority of 31 (against
