8 MACARONI WHEAT IN FOREIGN MARKETS.
ARGENTINE REPUBLIC.

I find, on inquiry, that of this wheat (known here as ‘‘Irigo
Candial ”) there is more produced in this country than is consumed,
and that there was last year, and will be this year, a very considerable
quantity of it exported to Italy, which seems to be the market for it.
The price of it ranges at about $2.50 gold per ton higher than for
other wheats.

AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
CARLSBAD.
Under date of October 17, 1903, United States Commercial
Agent J. S. Twells reports that there are only two small macaroni
factories in Carlsbad, and these obtain their wheat supplies from
Hungary, the freight rates and the Austrian tariff of 6o cents per
220 pounds being heavy handicaps on American wheat.

Complete ignorance seems to exist here regarding the character
of macaroni wheat. Macaroni itself is made at but one point in this
district, and that in a small way, at Teplitz. As nearly as can at
present be ascertained here the factory uses common wheat meal or
flour, purchased on the market, with certain ingredients, including
saffron instead of eggs, and its product is not in favor on that
account. Other factories are reported at Budweis, in southern Bohemia,
and at Linz, Austria, but the bulk of the product on the
retail market is imported from Klein-Miinchen, Bavaria. Grocers
here report but a small demand for macaroni, and it is not in general
use by the masses.
These facts, as well as general inquiry, indicate the total absence
of any market for such an unknown quantity as ‘“‘macaroni wheat.”
If the quality and utilities of the grain were known a small trial
market might be cultivated, providing the grain could be laid down
at the mills here at a price to induce experiment.
The Austrian tariff is as follows, per 220 pounds: Wheat, 73
cents; wheat flour, $1.83; macaroni, $4.87.
