The notes on these items which had been prepared by Mr. H. C.
Sampson of the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation and which had
already been circulated (see Appendix) were considered and after
certain subsidiary matters had been brought forward it was agreed to
discuss the subjects of plant breeding and seed distribution under the
following headings : —
'" The keeping and correlation of records, including the clerical
side of the work.
Nomenclature of new strains.
«. General technique at plant breeding stations.
+ Selfing methods.
The position with regard to crossing.
The exchange of strains between different territories.
Methods of planting for economical multiplication of seed for
small plots, by hand; and for larger areas, by methods other
than by hand.
Mass methods for maintaining quality of cotton seed.
& Seed distribution.
When these subjects had been disposed of it was agreed that the
other items on the Agenda should be taken.
1. Tae KeepiNG AND CORRELATION oF FIeLp REecorps.
Mr. DUCKER, who introduced the subject, considered that the
correlation of records was extremely important, especially in territories
such as Nyasaland where the variations of seasons were great. Tn
a few years, reliable information could be obtained regarding the
growth, flowering and fruiting of the plant, the incidence of insect
attacks, etc. The influence of climatic conditions on these various
matters might then become apparent. Up to date he had only been
able to start records in a small way, but he wished to extend the
system and obtain continuous and exact observations. One of the
main handicaps was the shortage of native staff. He was now
collecting records of plants at two stations, one at the height of about
2,100 feet, the other at the height of about 150 feet above sea level,
