the Bean milling is in most cases conducted mostly as a
domestic by-industry to fill the local needs (Hankow being
excepted). Therefore, the consumptions are not at all
large. Of about 2,000,000 “‘koku” of Manchurian Beans
exported to Shanghai and South China, what is used for
milling purposes is only of very small quantity, the major
remainder serving as material for preparing divers kinds of
food, .

Java has been importing Manchurian Beans in recent
years to the amount of 500,000-600,000 ‘‘koku’’ a year.
Java being in the Tropics is unsuited to Bean cultivation,

but on the higher levels in the mountainous or hilly districts,
the temperature is more temperate, better suited to Bean
raising. However, Beans are of poor quality and are moreover
put out only in a limited amount, the total production
being 800,000 “‘koku’ or so without prospect of future
increase. How Manchurian Beans came to be in request
in Java district originated from their import from Chefoo
and Tientsin by the old Chinese setilers in the Island. By
and by, the natives got acquainted with them until they
have become one of the food stuffs of cheap price and for
daily consumption.
