l/ie rales of exchange in any country are at such a point that no
profit is to be made on shipments of gold to it, must be enrefuHy
guarded from leading to a misconception. Such a fact is valuable to
hnotv, to a certain degree ; but it does not prove that the despatch of
bullion may not be natural and necessary neverthless. It must be .sent
by tho.se who are in debt to that country, if they cannot find bills.'*
Weniger richtig ist, was Smith, B. IV, Ch. I über den
Export oder Import von Edelmetall sagt: ,,The transportation of
commodities, when properly suited to the market, is allways attended
with a considerable proft; wheras that of gold and silver is .scarce
ever attended with any. ¡Vhen those metals are sent abroad in
order to purchase foreign commodities, the merchan t\s
pro fit arises , n o t from t h e p u r c h a se , but from the sale of
the returns. Itut when they are sent abroad merely to pay a debt,
he gets no returns, and consequently no profit. He naturally, therefore,
exerts his invention to find out a way of paying his foreign
debts, rather by the exportation of commodities then by that of f;old
and silver.** Der Profit des Kaufmannes erwächst niemals ausschliesslich
