From 13th April, 1927, the returns of the United Kingdom
have ceased to include tyres and tubes imported with complete
vehicles or chassis as part of their equipment, or fitted on wheels
separately imported. The figures since this date cannot, therefore,
he compared with those for earlier periods.

39. The next most important branch of the rubber industry is
that known technically as ‘‘ mechanicals,”’ which comprise drivingbelts,
 hose, valves, packings and various shock-absorbers and other
rubber goods used in connection with machinery. They form an
important and growing branch of the rubber manufacturing industry.
 From the particulars published in the report of the Census
of Manufactures : 1927, issued by the United States Department of
Commerce, the value of ‘‘ mechanicals ’ manufactured in the
United States. has been as follows :—
