been erected. In the Union alone 22 (twenty-two) registered
ginneries have been established, and in Swaziland one.
The cost of production and profit naturally depend largely on the
value of lint, the yield, and the distance from the ginneries. Even
if these should be quite favourable sufficient labour must be available
at reasonable wages. Without an ample supply of labour it is almost
hopeless to grow cotton profitably. Fortunately, most parts of the
Union suitable for the growing of cotton are well supplied with cheap
native labour.
The cotton plant, however, is subject to the attacks of numerous
insect pests. But in South Africa the only two really serious pests
are boll-worms and jassid, insects which in some areas are threatening
the very existence of this most promising industry. The work on
breeding jassid resistant varieties by the Cotton Division has been
handed over to Mr. Parnell of the Empire Cotton Growing
Corporation, and a solution now seems in sight. The boll-worm
trouble is being investigated very seriously by the Department. In
connection with Cotton pests also it is a great pleasure to record the
readiness with which the Corporation has come forward to assist in
every way possible. ~~ With further assistance and co-operation from
the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation it is confidently expected
that some solution will be found out of the very serious boll-worm
menace. Once this difficulty is overcome there will be no limit to the
development of cotton growing in South Africa.
