As the population of Crefeld is mainly Roman Catholic, a good deal of fish
is eaten, especially on Fridays. The fish consumed by the working classes is
usually only herrings, salt or pickled; the latter cost under Id. each, whilst
salt herrings are somewhat cheaper and cost about 6|d. a dozen. Fresh herrings
are obtainable usually only for a few weeks ; during that period they are sold
by weight, usually at Id. per lb. A special Crefeld delicacy is “ fresh sea-
mussels,” which are advertised by many of the cheaper restaurants.
Horseflesh is much eaten (there are four or five horse butchers in the
town), and the price has risen greatly during the last two years, the usual price
being about 5d. per lb., as compared with 2fd. two years ago, whilst the best
cut (the fillet) costs about 6|d.
Prices in Crefeld were, on the whole, at about the same general level
as in Berlin, though the prices levels for the chief groups of commodities
differed considerably. Taking prices in the capital as 100, the corresponding
figures for Crefeld would be 102 for food other than meat, 113 for meat, and
71 for coal, while for all commodities taken together the figure is the same
as in Berlin, whilst the index number for rent and prices com! ined is 90.
