in Spots, while, with Bean Cake and Bean Oil, they are
usually transacted in by Future Contract.
(1) Spor BusiNess IN BEANS
Spot business in Beans outside the Exchanges may be
subdivided into (a) on the river, (b) on the market, (c) in
the osier bins, and (d) on the train.
River Beans are mostly carried by junks on the river
and are distiguished from railway shipments. River Beans
are dealt in most extensively at Yingkou (Newchwang),
Tiehling, Antung, Tungkiangkou, Sankiangkou, and Fafengkou
coming next.
Beans carted over to the market are classed Ttnder
this head. During the produce season in winter, stocks are
brought by the owners by carts to the nearest market, or
by the retailers who have bought the stocks direct from the
producers. On the Changchun or the Kaiyuan Market
alone, daily arrivals are sometimes measured by 5.000 carloads
or thereabouts.
In most cases, business is carried on between the
farmers and the local produce dealers or between the
farmers and the local produce dealers and the wholesalers
at the pricipal produce centres on the railway, little business
being done by Japanese buyers direct. The wholesalers
